Février comptait 29 jours les années normales du calendrier julien originel, et trente jours les années bissextiles, ce qui se produisit douze fois entre 710 AUC (44 av. J.-C.) et 746 AUC (8 av. J.-C.), bien que neuf années bissextiles seulement eussent dû avoir lieu durant ce laps de temps.
C'est justement pour remercier Auguste d'avoir remarqué l'erreur que le mois d'août fut nommé en son honneur et qu'il fut allongé de 30 à 31 jours, à égalité avec le mois de juillet. En compensation, février fut raccourci de 29 à 28 jours les années normales, et de 30 à 29 jours les années bissextiles.
